I was in Bali b4 xmas and was at this lounge bar with my friend a couple of girls, and i started to talk to one of em who was from NYC but lived in Bali nowdays … long story short she used to share an apt with a girl who dated Q-tip so Tip and dudes from De La and Jungle Brothers used to hang there all the time ..this was right b4 they blew up . And apperantly the girls ex was a dumb fxck who wouldn’t leave her alone so thats him Q-tip talks about in “Description of a fool” on People’s Instinctive Travels And Paths Of Rhythm. funny story…
I had a dope crush on this one girl and I got the chance to take her out for her bday. So we drank and danced, but at one point i asked her to sit down and i asked the dj to throw on “bonita applebaum.” I dedicated that jam to her and she loved it. No one had ever done that for her, so after that, it was a wrap. Bonita applebaum got me to score. word.
The 1st time I ever heard of Tribe was listening to this JB song ‘The Promo’ where Q-Tip was spitting on the last verse talking about his group Tribe and Tribe’s album dropping “2 months before June”. His flow had me curious to what Tribe was all about.
I remember when I 1st copped the ‘People’s Instinctive Travels’ album and falling in love with that ‘Footprints’ joint, Tip’s rhymes, how the song started with the sample running a few bars and those pounding drums dropping with bassline a few bars in, that joint had me mad open. I even remember copping their 2nd LP and noticing Phife’s major improvement on the flow when I 1st heard ‘Buggin Out’ and ‘We Got The Jazz’.
When I started digging in the crates, I stumbled upon a few of their original samples from their early joints and was blown away by how far back in Tip and Ali took it. Midnight Marauders, Beats, Rhymes and Life, the Scenario Remix, damn, mad classics from one of the most influential groups in hip hop period.
Talk about creating a whole new Genre of music… The history of hip hop proceeds to Identify itself, but forever A Tribe called Quest G.O.A.T.
ATCQ is the definition of “Boom Bap” hip hop, they definitely the dopest group ever next to De La, and my all time favorite from the “Golden Era”!!
Word!
ATCQ changed the way i saw hip-hop back in the early 90’s.
peace!
